The BR Xcellence is a tendon boot for the front legs, with a hard polyurethane outer shell, an extra reinforced impact zone at the back and a lining of 5 mm neoprene. It closes with elastic hook-and-loop fastenings. A practical choice if you train or jump daily and need the same boot in several sizes, from Shetland pony to warmblood.
About these tendon boots
Tendon boots sit on the front legs, over the flexor tendon and around the fetlock. They take whatever comes against that part of the leg: a hind hoof that strikes in, a hoof that brushes past, a pole. The Xcellence does that with a hard polyurethane shell.
What sets this model apart is at the back. There the shell carries an extra plastic impact zone, exactly where a striking hind hoof lands. Above that rear section there is an anatomical cut-out, so the edge does not press against the fetlock when the leg flexes. That makes the Xcellence more solidly built than the simpler BR Event, without having to move to a different fastening system.
The lining is 5 mm neoprene, blind-finished along the edges, so there is no noticeable seam down the side. Neoprene is soft against the leg and takes part of the blow; it also seals well, which makes it warmer and damper under the shell than under an open bandage. Keep that in mind during long sessions in summer. The composition BR states is 100% polyurethane for the outside and 100% polychloroprene (neoprene) as the second material.
You close them with two strong hook-and-loop fastenings, each with double elastic and a flap over the top, so the hook-and-loop cannot work loose while you ride. Only in size Shetland is there one fastening instead of two. The elastic in the straps lets the leg work a little; it also means you have to fit them by feel, because elastic hides the fact that you are closing them too tightly.
It is a boot that gets on with the job without much fuss. You clean it by rinsing it under the tap after riding; really dirty boots can go into the machine at up to 30 °C, in a wash bag. We stock the Xcellence in black, white and navy, in sizes Shetland, Pony, Cob and Full. Not every colour comes in every size. The BR Xcellence line also includes a saddle pad, brushing boots, fetlock boots and an ear bonnet, so you can carry the colour through. Do note that a tendon boot belongs on the front legs; behind you use fetlock boots. And boots are not allowed in the competition arena at international dressage events.
